"Because I Can" Cabaret

Join Maggie Hutchison in celebrating her 30th birthday with the “Because I Can” Cabaret! Maggie is a proud Class of 2015 STA alumna and professional actor in town, and she’s using her birthday as an excuse to put on a show! And don’t worry; it’s not that kind of cabaret. Expect a concert that’s part show tunes, part rock concert, part everything in-between. She’ll sing some of her favorite songs, old and new, and reflect on the people and experiences that have brought her to where she is today. See you there! Performance run time is approximately 90 minutes including a 15 minute intermission. There will be light concessions available. Please note: no alcohol is allowed on campus for this event.

About

As a way to thank St. Teresa’s Academy and to give back to the people and community that helped shape me into who I am today, I am collecting donations for the Steven Karlin Scholarship.

Steven Jeffrey Karlin was the accompanist at St. Teresa’s Academy for six years until his untimely death in 2016. He organized the Karlin Kabaret- a performance series to introduce students to composers they may not come across through the fall musicals at STA, Creative Grounds- a multi-disciplinary open-mic night, he was the proctor for Praise Band and the Gay-Straight Alliance, and he was known as one of the funniest, sassiest, and friendliest members of the faculty and staff at STA.

Steven was and is one of the smartest people I have ever known. He was an expert pianist and teacher, a skilled performer (a proud member of the Heartland Men’s Chorus), was fluent in French, had a degree in Journalism, was studying physics, and was writing a novel. A true Renaissance man. Not only that, but he was immensely kind and supportive to every student he came across. I spent countless hours in he and Mr. Monsma’s classroom during free periods laughing, playing Catch-Phrase, and learning more than I realized at the time. He encouraged and supported me in my pursuit of my musical theater degree and went out of his way to be available to help me prepare for various auditions.

Steven was also a huge positive influence on young people in the LGBTQ community, even those who wouldn’t discover that part of themselves until later in life (cough cough). Having a mentor who was so unapologetically themselves was incredibly valuable to every young person who crossed his path, no matter their sexual orientation. He exuded kindness, understanding, pride, and humor every day. I hope to live in such a way that would make him proud.
