About

When William Callaghan died in 1822 he left Catherine McAuley with a fortune that would have allowed her to live comfortably for life. Instead, she used these resources to open the House of Mercy on Baggot Street (pictured above) in Dublin, Ireland, to serve those who were the most marginalized at the time: homeless women and children. On September 24, 1827, the House of Mercy opened with a mission to provide housing and education to those who would not have access otherwise. Since that time, the Sisters of Mercy have advanced Catherine’s vision by making a college education accessible to those who would otherwise not be able to afford it.

In this same spirit, Saint Joseph’s College is proud to announce the new House of Mercy Fund. With your generous support, we will fulfill Catherine’s and the Sisters’ legacy now and in the future by providing financial assistance to low income students from historically underrepresented communities. This financial assistance can be applied in two ways:

  • offsetting core college expenses like tuition, housing, books, meal plans, and necessary supplies;
  • covering unexpected life expenses and/or urgent needs as determined in consultation with the Dean of Students, or their designee.

Update #1 - 4 years ago

Donato Tramuto H’19, founder and chair of the Tramuto Foundation, has long been focused on compassion and kindness and how those simple actions can change another’s life. Today Donato has issued a challenge to the SJC community: in honor of 193 years since Catherine McAuley opened the doors of Baggot Street, when we reach 193 donors to the House of Mercy Fund, he will donate $5,000! He also shares with the SJC community a special message about the importance of using your voice to the benefit of helping others.

Make a gift today will have a ripple effect for SJC students today and tomorrow.
