About
Legacy of Tom Doerger
Tom Doerger left a lasting impact on the La Salle community. He was born on January 12, 1963 and passed on December 23, 2022. Growing up in Mt. Healthy, he attended Assumption Grade School and then graduated from La Salle High School in 1981. He furthered his education at Notre Dame, where he played a crucial role as an offensive tackle for the Fighting Irish up until 1985. Transitioning into teaching and coaching at La Salle in July of 1992, he taught the subjects religion, sociology, psychology, and physical education. Known for his immense voice and piercing eyes when needed, he was the O-line football coach from 1992 to 2022, he also coached basketball and track briefly. While coaching football he helped lead four teams to state titles. Tom emphasized the importance of hard work in the weight room, knowing that the real effort happens when the bright lights are off. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was recognized for his humble and caring demeanor, demanding respect, discipline, high effort and a strong faith from his students and athletes. As he continued to serve La Salle as dean of students, attendance officer, and finally the head of the counseling department, he continued to be a positive influence on countless lives over 30 years. Despite his remarkable achievements, he remained humble, shying away from recognition and often working behind the scenes. He consistently volunteered at La Salle and other community events, emphasizing the importance of being “Called To Serve.” A multifaceted individual, he was cherished as a husband, grandfather, father, brother, cousin, coach, counselor, teacher, and friend. Tom’s legacy was extended through his son Luke, which could be seen in his heartfelt speech, centered around the profound impact of “The Dash,” symbolizing the essence of Tom’s life well-lived. We continue to follow Coach Doerger’s example of what it truly means to be Lasallian!
