Our next employee spotlight features Caroline Schafer, from our Marketing Team.
The morning, before everyone gets up. I get to set intentions for my day, workout and take care of myself before my workday starts. During the summer, I like to drink my coffee on my screened-in porch and listen to the birds while planning my workday. I try to spend as much time as I can outside in the morning before I start my workday.
My children, who are discovering who they are and have a world of possibilities in front of them. My husband who is my rock and helps me weather the storms of life. I’m also inspired by people who are confident and successful because having role models to look up to makes me strive to improve myself in my personal and professional life.
I’ve traveled all over Europe and Italy is my favorite destination. I’ve been there several times and spent my honeymoon in Sicily. I would love to go spend a year in Italy and explore once I retire. My dream is to learn Italian, and spend time in small, less touristy towns where I can absorb the Italian culture and everyday life.
One of my favorite places in Italy is Taormina, a small Mediterranean town in Sicily. Between soaking up the sun on the beaches to visiting ancient Roman ruins and eating great food, it’s the perfect vacation spot! At there are hotels on the coast where the view of Mount Etna is incredible. My favorite time to visit Taormina is in October when the weather is cooler and there are fewer tourists.
I can speak three languages and French is my first language. I also speak German. And does Latin count? I spent five years learning Latin in high school. Although it’s not spoken, it helped me understand other languages such as Spanish and Italian. I can’t speak these languages, but I understand them. My goal is to learn Italian and Spanish next.
I came from the tech world where I always felt like I didn’t belong. After spending 15 years working as an engineer and transitioning to work for a tech company, I never felt like I belonged. When I started working at a high school, it was a drastic change for me, but I found what was missing in my life to make me feel like I was making a difference.
Working at and with schools brings a certain amount of humanity and mission in my life. As a mom, I understand the importance and accessibility of good education. All school employees feel that same sense of importance, which makes educators, fundraisers and recruiters mission-driven. BoostMySchool is a company that understands this. Even if there’s a tech component to the product, the end goal is not entirely about selling software, but it’s about helping schools grow and be sustainable. I feel like I can balance my tech side with the human side by working with schools!
Holman is the founder and CEO of Boost My School. He actively helps his former high school with their fundraising and alumni outreach, which is how the idea for Boost My School came about. He is a strong believer in the power of education to change the world and volunteers with programs that support underrepresented students in math and science.
