Golf & The John C. O’Brien Scholarship
Beloved teacher/coach, John C. O’Brien inspired his students, colleagues and friends to be kind, work hard, love what they do, and do what they love. His concern for others and his legendary style brought out the best in those around him, and he had an enduring impact on Bishop Stang. Mr. O’Brien coached many sports, but was most closely identified as the first and only boys basketball coach at Bishop Stang until his death in 1985. To quote Coach Jim Lanagan, “John O’Brien’s capacity to care for others, especially members of the Stang community, is without limits. In this way above all others, he exemplifies Christ.”
The funds raised are awarded in renewable four-year scholarships to deserving students exhibiting the qualities John O’Brien stood for, and who could otherwise not afford to attend Bishop Stang. The scholarships have ranged in amounts and number of awards during the scholarship fund’s 30 year history, but scholarships in John O’Brien’s memory have continuously been awarded to students since 1990.
It is a beautiful tribute to John O’Brien that so many people continue to support this memorial scholarship that keeps Bishop Stang accessible to students who add so much to our school community. Without your support, these students would not have the opportunity to share the Bishop Stang experience.
