Morgan Tower Project

Thank you for your interest in supporting The Tower on the Marsh Project.

The Christiana Morgan Tower is one of The Governor’s Academy’s least known and most historically important and intriguing buildings. Donated to the Academy in 1969, the Tower has stood in a location distant from the center of campus life until the recent construction of the Bill ’67 and Peter ’71 Alfond Coastal Research Center which draws students and faculty to the northern border of campus along the Great Marsh and Parker River. The proximity of the Tower to the Alfond Center opens new opportunities to achieve the vision Morgan had when she donated the Tower to the Academy—to support an artist-in-residence program and the study of the subjects to which she devoted her life: psychology, philosophy, literature, and the arts.

About

The Morgan Tower is currently used for faculty housing at The Governor’s Academy. Recently, a group of stakeholders from the Academy and interested parties called The Tower Group*, including Morgan’s granddaughter, partnered to ensure the future of the building and its related collections.

As it nears its 100th anniversary, the building needs repair and conservation. Without this necessary work, important elements of the building’s history and architecture will be lost. This approaching anniversary presents a compelling opportunity not just to preserve the Tower, but also to re-visit, honor, and share Morgan’s legacy through the creation of the Christiana Morgan Tower.

The conservation of the Tower will provide Governor’s students, along with visiting scholars and artists, the opportunity to research, create, and learn in an unique environment and facility rich in history and meaning.

The Tower will serve as an arts and humanities complement to the neighboring Alfond Center. The Tower will also offer curricular, residential, and creative work in the arts and humanities rooted in the Academy’s commitment to place-based learning, as well as summer opportunities for research, residencies, and retreats.

* The Tower Group includes Dr. James Page ’71, Chancellor Emeritus of the University of Maine System; Brian Pfeiffer ’69, internationally recognized New England architectural historian; Dr. Jan Marlan, Jungian psychoanalyst; and Hilary Morgan, filmmaker and granddaughter of Christiana Morgan.
