Even though we are new to Head-Royce, we feel a tremendous sense of community here already. We believe in the school's 3 pillars and are proud to be a Jayhawk family! (Photo is of both boys at the All School Fair. Ryan is in 9th and Cameron will be a future Jayhawk one day, hopefully.)

Andy Spear's graduation speech (Class of '95) was also memorable. For his speech, he wrote a Dr. Suess-esque story of our journey after high school called "On My Way to the Land of the Huckabye Rose," which was full of all sorts of wisdom about enjoying life's journey. The school bound special copies of it for our class, and I still have it to this day.

I was in the last graduating class from the original campus in Berkeley, 1963, and the last class to be all girls. One of the biggest thrills was to at last be a Senior and have exclusive rights to the Senior Porch. It was tabu for underclassmen (well women in this case) and we ate our lunches there and soaked up the sun working on now forbidden tans. We realized it was the end of high school and the beginning of what was to come. I remember lots of good times out there being the Queens of the school, or so we thought.

Another favorite memories were Fallout field trips to Yosemite and the Russian River. I remember Cathy Hunter (head of Upper School) giving us a speech on the first night of Russian River that we had permission for co-ed sleeping arrangements in tents, but she didn't want any "knockin' da boots." (Hit song at the time). Lastly, our baseball team winning the school's first NCS championship, and Coach Talps giving all the players engraved (fake) gold-plated watches.

The best part about 4th grade were the class pets! We had a turtle, a grumpy bunny, maybe some other creatures, and then got two rats, I think from Mr. (Barney) Howard. Shortly after we got them, one had babies! That year so many of us brought home pet rats and mine, Tommy, lived until partway through 8th grade, which I'm told is old for a rat! Some of the folks I met in that class are still my best friends!

It was interesting being in the last class of all girls. A group of us every day in spring would eat lunch under the glorious wisteria on the southern side of campus. To this day it is among my favorite flowers and the scent brings me back to the close camaraderie and dear friendships which have endured so far throughout my life.

One of my favorite memories is the debut public appearance of what eventually became the jazz band...playing "Layla" by Clapton. Newly hired Bob Wells on keyboard and vocals; he was unprepared throughout practice but insisted he'd nail the performance. On the big night, the students did their part, and then Bob came in thunderously...in completely the wrong key. He was mortified and we never let him forget it.

I have so many wonderful memories of AHS/HRS. My best story though re: a faculty member is of Dr. Virginia Steele. She was such a tremendous influence in my high school years; Kind reassuring, very warm and very erudite. One time, I came back to school after a week or two being Ill at home, Dr. Steele arranged on her own time to meet me… I was so in awe of her, had so much respect for her knowledge base, and ways of making history come alive. The lectures were fascinating and I remember at 16 that she made me feel special, an important thing for a shy teenager. I was touched by how much regard she had for me and that she would individually help me catch up in my classes.
Kate Johnson Spector (Alumni ’71)

During my Senior year, I took U.S. History with Phyllis Hill. On pop quiz days, Mrs. Hill would write each question, one at a time, on the black board. Then, she would erase that question. She could write and stand in such a way that her back was to the classroom door which had a window in it, thereby blocking anyone’s view, who might be walking down the hallway, and who might be in her other section of the class, and who might be trying to get “recon” on whether or not it was a pop quiz day and what were the questions? Mrs. Hill was “old school” and we loved her.

One of my favorite Head-Royce memories actually took place on the College Prep School campus. I played on the basketball team, and late in the season my senior year, we had a big away game against CPS. In the week leading up to the game, I remember expecting their gym to be extremely loud and 99% Cougar fans. However, during warmups, it became clear that a HUGE number of Jayhawk faithful were there – students, faculty, and other members of the HRS community. They were almost all decked out in green and gold. Even though they didn’t quite outnumber the home fans, their school spirit was off the charts, and they were a huge reason we ended up winning the game!

One of my favorite HRS memories: Fall Out! Every year, Fall Out never failed to be the best experience I had with my classmates, and getting to bond with each other outside of the classroom setting was irreplaceable. I remember on my last Fall Out trip of senior year, I finally mustered up the courage to sing a song in front of my classmates during our usual campfire—it was memorable and formative, and I’m grateful to have had such wonderful trips every year throughout my 7 years at HRS.

I transitioned to Head-Royce in 4th Grade and had Mrs. Laddish as my teacher. She was the coolest teacher and rode her bike to school every day. Her warm demeanor, engaging and hands-on science activities, along with my fun new classmates, made the transition to a new school go smoothly. I had my first class overnight that year when we went camping in Sunol near a creek. It was so fun, and such a breath of fresh air compared to my old school.
Laura Getman (Alumni ’73)

In 12th grade, there were five of us in all my AP classes that year and I remember being thrilled that we all went up on the top of Royce building to drop feathers, balls, and other objects and time them off the roof to enable us to experience first hand Newton's laws Ha ha was interesting as well as a lot of fun.
